Uncle David pointed out that by installing single cylinder deadbolts at the garage doors creates a security risk since someone could break the window, reach around the door, and unlock it from the inside. To install double cylinder deadbolts we would either need these deadbolts to require a separate key rather than the key used for the rest of the house or we could take it to have it rekeyed. I looked into seeing if I could buy a single or double cylinder deadbolt and use it on the inside of the existing deadbolt but it doesn't look like you can do that.
To complete the research/brainstorming phase of this project we need to decide if and how we want to go about this. Let's set the deadline for this as 3/1/2020.
Mom and David have requested that we build shutters for the doors. Let's set a deadline for the design/planning phase of this as 7/1/2020.
I'm thinking that the shutter should sit inside of the door frame so it can be inset a bit more and we could even potentially drill some of the shutter out at the doorknob to inset even further. Therefore it should sit inside of "WIDTH 2" and "HEIGHT 2". We could make it a standard size of 79-1/2" x 35" which should fit within each door frame.
David was thinking that we also install security cameras but we would need them to connect to the wifi. To do this would require the cameras to be relatively close to the router, the power would have to stay on for this, and it would eat through our data.
We are in the research/brainstorming phase to figure out how or if we want to proceed with this. Let's set a deadline for this phase as 5/1/2020.
I developed the following sketchup model to show a design. Each one will require:
12: 2 x 4 x 92 - 5/8" ($38.52)
3: 0.5" x 4' rebar ($13.41)
9" of 2" x 1/4" plate ($1.31)
12: eye hook screws ($21.36)
60: 3-1/2" screws (perhaps about $5)
Each shutter should cost about $80 so shutters for all four doors would cost about $320.
However each door would also weigh over 100 lbs. We could instead use 1x4s instead of 2x4s for the boards which would cut the weight down significantly and cost by $10 per door.

Considering that we are not even used the window shutters or locking the gate anymore, I question the need to spend the time and money on these door shutters on these security measures.
