Checking of the logs are not necessary a problem but can become severe and are a result of damage to the log, improper drying, or from structural loading.
They can potentially lead to water damage, air leaks, insect damage, or although rarely structural problems.
However, after reviewing a few articles, we probably shouldn't worry too much about the checking the house logs especially since the overhang of the roof generally protects them from moisture but if we wanted to then we could seal them off as shown.
