Items in Bold are Pending Tasks
I got the factory service manual for the truck but its hard to wade through all the content. Alternatively I may look into other manuals like Hayes or Chilton
Engine Oil and Filter Change
Uses 5W-30 engine oil
Required every 3 months or 3k miles
Last replaced at 44,883 miles in 11/2022
Maintenance Tasks at Oil Change
Check the transmission fluid level
Uses DEXRON II automatic transmission fluid
Required when changing the engine oil
It looks like I already had this done at the dealership at about 30k miles ago but they had really overfilled it
The dipstick specifically says not to overfill it so I drained it and got the level right on
Lubricate the key lock cylinder (multi-purpose lubricant or a light weight engine oil) and weatherstripping (silicone grease)
I got this done (8/18/2019)
Drive Axle Service
Required every 3k miles
Check the front and rear differential fluid level and add as needed
Check the constant velocity joints and axle seals for leaking
Chassis Lubrication
Required every 12 months or every 3k miles
Parts to lubricate
Front suspension (not applicable due to maintenance-free ball joints)
Steering linkage (done at 44k miles)
Transmission shift linkage (done at 40k miles)
Uses engine oil
Transfer case shift linkage (done at 40k miles)
Parking brake cable guides (done at 40k miles)
Uses chassis grease
Propshaft splines (done at 44k miles)
Uses chassis grease
Universal joints - not sure how to do this yet
Uses chassis grease
Brake Pedal Springs - not sure how to do this yet
Lubricate steering linkages and propshaft splines
When I mentioned that I wasn't sure how to lubricate the joints without zerk fittings, its because they are maintenance-free joints
Lubricate transmission and transfer case linkages
Lubricate parking brake cable guides
Lubricate brake pedal linkage
Check power steering pump fluid level
Uses GM Part No. 1050017 or equivalent
Required at least every 6 months
It appeared to be at a good level (8/18/2019)
Exhaust System Inspection
Inspect catalytic converter
Inspect body near the exhaust system
Look for broken, damaged, missing or out-of-position parts as well as open seams, holes, loose connections or other conditions which could cause a heat buildup in the floor pan or could let exhaust fumes seep into the passenger compartment
Throttle linkage inspection
Inspect for interference, binding, damaged or missing parts and replace parts as needed
Engine Drive Belts Inspection
Inspect all belts for cracks, fraying and wear and adjust or replace as needed
Transfer case inspection
Check front axle and transfer case lubricant and add as necessary
Uses Dexron II Automatic Transmission Fluid
Oil the control lever pivot point and all exposed control linkage
Check vent hose at transfer case for kinks and proper installation
Annual Maintenance Tasks
Take truck to undercarriage wash
I did this in the fall of 2020
Engine cooling system service
Inspect coolant and freeze protection
Inspect hoses and replace if cracked, swollen or deteriorated
Tighten hose clamps
Clean outside of radiator and air conditioning condenser
Wash radiator fill cap and neck
Pressure test the cooling system and cap
When I tested the coolant and:
got a voltage of 52.3 mV
recommended less than 400 mV
has a freeze protection of approximately -28 degrees F
recommended -34 degrees F
has a boiling protection of 262 degrees
recommended 265 degrees F
Body Lubrication Service
Lubricate the body door hinges including the tailgate with engine oil
Lubricate the body hood, fuel door, and rear compartment hinges and latches including interior glove box and console doors, and any folding seat hardware
I got this done except for the fuel door, rear compartment hinges and latches, and the folding seat hardware (8/17/2019)
Lubricate these with engine oil except the hood release pawl with chassis grease
Accelerator Control System
Lubricate all pivot points with engine oil except the TBI throttle shaft, any accelerator or cruise control cables
Replace any cables that have high effort or excessive wear
Maintenance Tasks Less Frequent that Annually
Tire and Wheel Rotation
Required every 6k miles
I'm not sure when this was last done
Drive Axle Service
Required every 15k miles
Uses SAE 80W-90 GL-5 gear lubricant
Drain and refill the front and rear differential fluid
Replaced at 32k miles
Transmission Service
Uses DEXRON II automatic transmission fluid
Required every 15k miles
Last done at 32k miles
This involves change the transmission fluid and filter
Cooling system service
Uses a 56/44 mixture of water and a good quality ethylene glycol antifreeze (meeting GM Specification 1825-M)
Required every 2 years or every 30k miles
Last done at 32k miles in approximately 2015
This involves draining, flushing, and refilling the coolant
Air Cleaner replacement
Required every 30k miles or more often in dusty conditions
Engine air filter replaced at 44,883 miles
Fuel Filter Replacement
Required every 30k miles
Replaced at 32k miles
Spark Plugs Replacement
Required every 30k miles
Replaced at 32k miles
Fuel Tank, Cap, and Lines Inspection
Required every 30k miles
This involves
Inspect the fuel tank, cap, and lines for damage or leaks
Remove the fuel cap, inspect gasket for an even filler neck imprint and any damage
Replace parts as needed
PCV System Inspection
Required every 60k miles
This involves checking the PCV system and replacing the valve and any worn, plugged, or collapsed hoses
Spark Plug Wire Inspection
Required every 60k miles
Replaced at 32k miles
This involves:
Clean the wire and inspect for burns, cracks, or other damage
Check the wire boot fit at the distributor and at the spark plugs
Replace as needed
Electronic Vacuum Regulator Valve (EVRV) Inspection
Required every 60k miles
This requires
Inspect the filter for excessive contamination or plugging
If needed, clean the element with a solution of biodegradable soap and water and let dry before reinstalling
Engine Timing Check
Required every 60k miles
I'm not sure if this applies to our model but it involves:
Adjusting the timing to the underhood label specification
Inspect the inside and outside of the distributor cap and rotor for cracks, carbon tracking, and corrosion
Clean and replace as needed
Engine Accessory Drive Belt(s) Inspection
Required every 60k miles
This involves inspecting the belts for cracks, fraying, wear, and proper tension and adjust or replace as needed
Change Brake Fluid
Uses Delco Supreme 11 brake fluid but I filled it with DOT 5.1 fluid
The brake fluid was previously observed to be very dark
I changed it in the fall of 2019
How often is this needed?
Miscellaneous Maintenance Jobs
Paint on the truck hood is peeling off and we need to stop this before it gets much worse.
It didn't look like the truck paint code is on the inside driver side door tag
I used a $1 can of white spray paint to paint the hood but mom wasn't a fan so I guess I won't paint the top of the cab where the lake toys have chipped the paint off.
HVAC mode problem
The HVAC mostly just flows through the window defrost and doesn't flow through the front vents at all.
One of the front wheel wells has rusted a hole through it. I think we should get some sheet metal and weld it over this hole.
Fuel Injector Cleaning
I have a fuel injector cleaning kit and the cleaning fluid but the kit did not have parts compatible with the truck
The truck has a 6C-2 Model 200 Throttle body which has a fuel pump which pumps the fuel at 18 psi although the pressure regulator throttles it back to 9 to 13 psi so if we perform this service at this point then I believe we would have to set the pressure regulator on the kit to 9 to 13 psi.
I think we should consider getting a lumber rack for the truck at some point. Currently this isn't a pressing item and we would want to establish a place to store it but at some point this may be useful especially to transport full sheets of sheet metal.
